One of my biggest tips when it comes to fashion is to dress in ways that make you look good and feel good. It’s always good to find things that you love.

Still, it can be the case that you have a problem area that you dress to hide, or a feature that you wish to draw less attention to—many of us do.

Creative styling is a great way to draw attention to features that you love, while diverting attention away from those that you don’t.

This post focuses on using fashion as a strategy to cover a part the body that many people struggle with dressing well—the tummy.

My Top 3 Strategies

Here are the 3 strategies that I think are best when it comes to using clothing to help17 hide a tummy. I go into these strategies more in the section below.

  • Lean on style tricks to draw attention away from your midsection.
  • Use clothes and layers to create the illusion of length.
  • Accentuate the positive. Find something about yourself that you like, and highlight it. This could be your hair, your makeup skills, your style, or your creative ways of designing and presenting yourself.

It’s important to find a style that you like, even during those times when you dress to draw less attention to one thing, while accentuating another.

10 Style Tips to Hide a Tummy

1—Wear high waist pants and skirts.

High waist pants and skirts help to define your midsection, providing support and minimizing that area of the body.

Pants and skirts that flare out from the midsection can also help to define your waist, while drawing attention to other parts of the body, like your legs, chest, and arms. Look for a wide leg or straight leg pants and a high waist, A-line skirts to help get the look.

Low rise jeans can accentuate the stomach area, drawing attention to the very thing that you want to hide.

2—Use clothing layers to create definition and length.

Use layers to help minimize your midsection while creating interest around other areas of your body.

One of the best ways to do this is to wear a slightly flowy or oversized top—whether it’s a tunic in summer or a long sleeved shirt in winter—over a pair of pants or jeans (straight leg works well).

Next, layer a jacket or blazer over the outfit. Use a jacket with a hem that ends at the waist. Slightly cropped blazers or jackets work well to create the look of a “false waist”.

Add a small heel to help elongate your lines and create a great look.

3—Wear good undergarments.

Good undergarments are the foundation of a good outfit. Some undergarments can help to provide support for and to accentuate your body shape, giving more definition to the outfits that you wear. High rise underwear and shapewear can help to define, sculpt, and provide support for different body shapes.

4—Choose the right accessories.

There are times when the right accessories can make an outfit great, and their use is often underrated.

Accessories can be used to help draw attention away from your midsection and toward a bright, bold, or simply great fashion piece that you happen to be wearing.

Colorful scarves can be layered over a top to provide coverage and bring out a fantastic aspect of your outfit.

Statement jewelry, sunglasses, and fabulous handbags and shoes are other pieces that can be used to draw attention for all the right reasons.

Avoid wearing belts and other clothing or accessories that bring focus to your midsection, like blouses with ruffled midsections or bodices.

5—Experiment with prints.

Use small prints to create interest in your outfit while drawing attention away from any particular part of your body. Whimsical, fun prints can be a great way to get the look.

When choosing prints, remember that larger prints can become overwhelming unless done carefully.

Small vertical stripes can also help to create the illusion of length, elongating your body and taking some attention away from your midsection.

6—Use long cardigans to create the illusion of length.

Elongate your line by wearing slightly form-fitting pants or skirts under a long cardigan or kimono that creates the illusion of length on your body.

With this look, you can wear different styles of tops—from camisoles or tunics in summer, to button up shirts in winter, giving you flexibility to wear this look almost year round.

This is a super flattering look that almost anyone can wear.

7—Wear monochromatic outfits.

Monochromatic outfits have been on trend for several seasons now, and it’s not surprising—these outfits look good on almost everyone.

Monochromatic looks work to elongate your body. Also, the focus tends to be more on the outfit and how you’ve put your look together.

Make your outfit fun and unique by matching together different textures in the same color family, or by using an accessory or clothing piece in a brilliant contrasting color to create interest. Here are some tips on how to make the best monochromatic outfits to wear in winter.

8—Wear a slightly flared tops and dresses.

Dresses that flare out slightly from top to bottom can give you a flattering look. The shape of the dress makes it so the fabric tends not to cling to the body, creating a free-flowing movement that is comfortable and stylish without accentuating your curves.

This style of dress is also flexible and fun to style. You can wear it over pants, leggings, or tights for extra warmth in winter.

You can also wear a flowy dress over cargo pants or shorts in summer for extra coverage, or wear it with bare skin and sandals to show off your legs.

9—Pay attention to the length of your sleeves.

Sleeves are not just used to cover your arms; they also draw attention to other parts of the body when people look to see what you are wearing. Avoid sleeves that end midway down the arm—either above, at, or just below the elbow, since the length will draw attention to your midsection.

10—Play up your assets.

If there is a part of your body that you particularly love, then play up this asset to the fullest.

There are many ways to do this, and here are a few examples:

  • If you have great hair, then wear a hairstyle that shows it off.
  • Use eye makeup to highlight your eyes. (The trend of using blue or green eyeshadow to create a modern version of smoky eyes is particularly intriguing).
  • If you have great legs, then show them off with bare legs during summer or tights during winter.
  • If you are a creative person, then create amazing outfits that are a cause for comment. You could also do things like make your own jewelry that people may notice and comment on.

Find something that you are proud of, and show it off to your advantage. Put more focus on your strong points, and other people will, too.
