The classic sandwich is made with sliced bread, but the avocado BLT tastes great as a wrap, too. You can substitute low carb flatbread or wraps for a lower carb option, and use turkey bacon for lower saturated fat.

What You’ll Need

But, back to making the basic BLT sandwich, here is what you will need to make a BLT sandiwch:

  • Bacon—Thick cut, crispy bacon works best. Use your favorite applewood smoked bacon or hickory smoked bacon. You can also use turkey bacon or carrot bacon for a lighter option.
  • Ripe avocado—One way to tell that an avocado is ripe, is that it will have dark brown skin. We use ¼ to ½ avocado per sandwich or wrap, depending on the avocado’s size. Sprinkle sliced avocado with lemon juice to keep it from turning brown.
  • Lettuce—Iceberg lettuce is the classic lettuce to use for the BLT, but butter crunch lettuce tastes delicious, too. Or you can use a mixed salad blend to get a variety of lettuce, spinach, and other greens.
  • Tomato—Use the juiciest, ripest tomato that you can find.
  • Mayonnaise—Use mayonnaise as a dressing for the sandwich. Or try herb mayo dressing for a twist. Ranch dressing is delicious, too.
  • Salt and pepper—Salt and pepper brings out the flavor of the vegetables. You could also use salt-free seasoning, or leave seasonings out completely as the bacon will have flavor of its own.
  • Bread—Use sandwich bread, flatbread, or a wrap to make this sandwich. Lightly toast sandwich bread before adding ingredients.
