Just as pumpkin spice latte is the signature drink of fall, peppermint mocha is the signature drink of winter for many people. When it’s time for fall vibes to take on a winter aesthetic, a tasty peppermint mocha is the drink that you want to have on hand.

A peppermint mocha makes the perfect holiday drink, especially for coffee lovers. Creamy milk, chocolate, and espresso are combined with peppermint flavor for an easy, sort of spicy, and irresistible winter drink recipe. Peppermint mocha is a great drink to serve at Christmas brunch or as a drink for a hot cocoa bar.

You can make a peppermint mocha for one in about 5 to 10 minutes, especially when you make it often enough that the practice speeds up your process. (I’ll let you decide if this is a good thing, or not!)

An easy peppermint mocha recipe can be hard to resist making once you know how to make peppermint mocha at home. Sometimes you just need a good, wintertime coffee drink—for reasons.

This popular winter drink is made using familiar ingredients, like coffee, espresso, chocolate syrup, and peppermint extract from the pantry, and milk and cream from the fridge.

Some recipes call for using cocoa powder to make peppermint mocha, but we prefer to use chocolate syrup, which blends easily into hot coffee and milk. Look for a good quality chocolate syrup to use—dark chocolate syrup is a favorite at home.

But if you have cocoa powder instead of chocolate syrup, then start by adding a rounded teaspoon to the coffee mug and stirring to blend it with the milk once the hot milk is poured into the cup.

Cocoa powder, like chocolate syrup and peppermint extract, is one of those things that you can adjust to taste as you become familiar with making and perfecting your homemade peppermint mocha drink.

Here is how to make peppermint mocha, a delicious coffee shop drink that is easy to make at home.

How to Make Peppermint Mocha

The first step when making a peppermint mocha is to add chocolate syrup to the bottom of your favorite coffee mug. This could be an everyday coffee mug that you use to power your work day, or your favorite oversized coffee mug for cozy cradling, or a cute Christmas coffee mug that celebrates the season. I love coffee mugs, so I won’t judge.

For a really fancy look, make the peppermint mocha in a clear glass coffee mug, and drizzle some of the chocolate sauce along the inside walls of the mug. This looks especially neat when you’re making peppermint mocha drinks for a hot chocolate bar or to serve to family and friends. They’ll appreciate the special touch and think you are a genius.

Next, add a small amount of peppermint extract to the coffee mug. How much you use depends on how much you like the flavor of peppermint. Start with somewhere between ⅛ to ¼ tsp of peppermint extract, and adjust the flavor from there.

Add a small amount of vanilla extract help round out the flavor of the peppermint mocha winter coffee drink. Use ⅛ to ¼ tsp of the vanilla extract, also.

Brew your favorite coffee or espresso, and add it to the cup. Use about ½ to 1 cup of freshly brewed coffee or 1 to 2 shots of espresso, depending on how strong you want the coffee or espresso portion of the peppermint mocha drink to be.

Next, heat up the milk. You can use dairy milk or plant based milk, such as almond milk, cashew milk, or oat milk. Use unsweetened plant based milk if you want less sweetness in your drink, or a sweetened plant based milk for a sweeter flavor.

Baristas in a coffee shop will often steam the milk by using the frother or steam wand on the shop’s espresso machine. If you have an espresso machine with a steam wand at home, then you may be used to steaming your own milk. But if you don’t have an espresso maker with a wand at home, there are other ways to heat up milk.

To heat the milk, you can add 1 cup of milk to a small saucepan, and heat the milk over low heat for 3 to 5 minutes, or until the milk is warm. Stir the milk frequently to help it cook evenly and prevent a skin from forming over the milk.

A second way to heat up milk is to use a milk frother, which will result in a creamy and frothy milk that is perfect to use for making coffee shop style drinks at home.

Whatever method you use to steam the milk, be careful to avoid touching the hot milk, the steam wand, and other cookware or equipment directly, as it will be hot.

Carefully pour the hot milk into the coffee mug over the espresso or coffee and the chocolate syrup. Top the peppermint mocha with whipped cream, and garnish the drink with crushed peppermint candy, shaved chocolate, ground cinnamon or cocoa powder, a sprig of fresh mint, or an extra drizzle of chocolate syrup to decorate and serve the drink.

Peppermint Mocha Toppings

Here are some great toppings for homemade peppermint mocha. Start with a layer of whipped cream, and then decorate the whipped cream with your favorite toppings—like crushed peppermint or chocolate.

1—Whipped Cream. Whipped cream makes a delicious topping for peppermint mocha and other popular winter drinks. If you want to make a plant based or vegan peppermint mocha, look for coconut whipped topping at your local supermarket.

2—Crushed Peppermint. Crushed peppermint candies are a perfect way to decorate the top of a peppermint mocha. Simply sprinkle the crushed peppermint over the whipped cream layer. During the holidays, you can sometimes find crushed peppermint near holiday foods at the supermarket, or make your own at home.

3—Mini Chocolate Chips. Mini chocolate chips are an absolutely adorable way to decorate winter drinks. Sprinkle the chocolate chips over the whipped cream layer.

4—Shaved Chocolate. Shaved chocolate adds a sophisticated look to any coffee or espresso drink. It also adds a touch of sweetness.

5—Chocolate Syrup. You can use milk chocolate or dark chocolate syrup to make peppermint mocha drinks. Our favorite is dark chocolate—it adds a rich layer of flavor to the drink. Drizzle chocolate syrup over the top of the peppermint mocha for even more chocolate-y goodness.

6—Ground Cinnamon. Sprinkle ground cinnamon over the drink for a hint of color.

7—Cocoa Powder. Dust the whipped cream with cocoa powder for an extra layer of chocolate flavor.

8—Mini Marshmallows. Mini marshmallows make a fun topping for peppermint mocha and other popular winter drinks.

9—Fresh Mint. A sprig of fresh mint adds a refreshing look to anything that you use it to top. You can eat the leaves, if desired, but remove any tough stems from the mint leaves, and add the stems to the compost pile or discard them.

Tips for Making Homemade Peppermint Mocha

Here are some tips that can help you to make a delicious, cafe style homemade peppermint mocha.

1—Use good quality ingredients. Since the drink is a simple one to make, it’s important to use good quality ingredients to make peppermint mocha at home. Use your favorite coffee or espresso, and a good, rich chocolate syrup for the best flavor.

2—Make it plant based. It’s easy to make a plant based peppermint mocha using almond milk, cashew milk, oat milk, or another type of plant based milk. Coconut whipped cream makes a great topping for a plant based or vegan peppermint mocha drink recipe.

3—Add whipped cream. For a real coffee shop experience, top the peppermint mocha with whipped cream. If using canned whipped cream, start by spraying whipped cream along the inside edges of the cup, and work your way toward the center.

4—Garnish the drink. Top the peppermint mocha with crushed peppermint candies, mini chocolate chips, or a sprig of fresh mint leaves for a festive touch.

5—Crush the peppermint. To make crushed peppermint, place a few peppermint candies in a sealable plastic bag. Press the bag to remove air, and then seal the bag and place it on a cutting board. Carefully tap the bag with a meat pounder to break the peppermint candy into small pieces. Placing a towel underneath the cutting board, between the cutting board and the countertop may help to prevent it from sliding. Crushed peppermint makes a pretty and colorful garnish for peppermint mocha.
