Homemade salsa is easy to make using a few simple ingredients. Here is an easy salsa recipe with lots of flavor.

We love our chips and salsa, so much so that salsa is one of the foods that we run out of often. Using a blender and a few simple ingredients, it is easy to make a new batch of salsa to fit our needs.

Salsa is easy to make using common ingredients from the market or garden. It may also be cheaper to make your own salsa, especially if you eat a lot of salsa or grow fresh, salsa-making vegetables—like tomatoes and peppers—in your garden.

Here is an easy salsa recipe to make using a can of tomatoes and simple ingredients from the supermarket, farmer’s market, or your garden. The salsa is flavorful, and it tastes great with everything from tortilla chips, burritos, and nachos, to omelets and breakfast bowls.

Tips on How to Make Salsa

  • Basic salsa ingredients include tomatoes, peppers, onions, garlic, and cilantro. A hint of lime adds the perfect amount of acidity and brings out the flavor.
  • This recipe uses canned tomatoes or fresh tomatoes. If using fresh tomatoes, roma tomatoes are a great choice for flavor; but any good, firm tomato will do. Core and trim the vegetables, then chop before adding to the blender.
  • Use canned diced tomatoes with green chiles to add flavor to the salsa. Choose mild, medium, or hot chiles to change the heat profile of the salsa. Or use raw, diced tomatoes for an extra fresh flavor.
  • Chill the salsa before eating it for best flavor. Use homemade salsa as a dip for chips, crackers, tortillas, or use it as a topping for nachos, burritos, quesadillas, burgers, or eggs.
  • Use caution when handling hot peppers. Residue from the peppers can irritate hands, eyes, and other body parts. Wearing food safe disposable gloves while handling peppers may help to prevent irritation.
  • Salsa makes a great side dish for many foods. Serve salsa with tortilla chips for a delicious and easy snack. Salsa tastes great with scrambled eggs and omelets. It also goes well with burritos, quesadillas, nachos, and grilled chicken and fish. Salsa makes a unique burger topping, especially for black bean burgers.

What You Need to Make Salsa

Here are some items that you need to make homemade salsa.

  • Tomatoes. Tomatoes are the main ingredient of this easy salsa recipe. Use canned tomatoes for ease and convenience, or core and chop a few fresh tomatoes if you have some on hand. Diced tomatoes with green chiles add piquant flavor to the salsa recipe.
  • Peppers. Sweet bell pepper and a small hot pepper are used to add crunch and flavor to the recipe. (The hot pepper is optional, though.) Both jalapeño and Serrano peppers add wonderful spicy flavor to salsas.
  • Molcajete. A molcajete can be used to grind foods, like dried herbs and spices. Some salsas are made using a molcajete.
  • Blender. A blender makes it easy to process the ingredients for salsa. Just give the vegetables a quick chop, add them to the blender with herbs, spices, and lime juice, and pulse until the salsa reaches your desired consistency.
  • Garlic Press. A garlic press makes it easy to mince fresh garlic, which adds a ton of flavor to recipes.
  • Smoked Paprika. Smoked paprika lends a sweet, smoky flavor to everything from chicken to your favorite salsa recipe.
  • Food Storage Container. Chill the salsa before serving for best flavor. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
