How to Make Butternut Squash Puree

What if I can’t find canned butternut squash?

If you can’t find canned butternut squash at a store near you, then look for the next best thing. You can make butternut squash puree using fresh, cubed butternut squash or frozen butternut squash cubes.

Many supermarkets carry fresh butternut squash that has already been cubed. This saves you the time and work involved with peeling and slicing a whole butternut squash.

Simply add the cubed butternut squash to a large saucepan and add 1 cup of water.

Cover and steam the butternut squash until it is tender enough to mash, about 7 to 10 minutes. Drain the squash, and then let the boiled butternut squash cubes cool before mashing the cubes or blending the cubes until a butternut squash purée is formed.

Here are two of my favorite types of saucepan and spoons to use for making and stirring butternut squash soup: a 3 quart saucepan and large wooden spoons. I love to cook using large wooden foods in fall and winter–it makes things feel extra cozy.

A masher is handy for mashing soft, boiled butternut squash cubes to turn them into puree. You can also use a handheld mixer or immersion blender to blend the butternut squash with a small amount of heavy cream, milk, or water. It’s best to let the butternut squash cool first, before blending.

You now have butternut squash purée to use for making homemade butternut squash soup.

A second option to make homemade butternut squash puree is to use a package of frozen butternut squash. Cook the squash according to package directions. Then simmer it in water or stock until it is easy to mash, similar to making butternut squash purée using fresh butternut squash.

One way to bring out some flavor is to cook the thawed butternut squash in a small amount of butter in a pan for about 2 to 3 minutes, prior to adding the stock and other ingredients. Stir the butternut squash continuously to keep it from burning. You can also do this with canned butternut squash puree to remove moisture and intensify the flavor of the squash.
