This post is all about setting up a morning coffee routine for fall.
Fall means crisp autumn air, falling leaves, and the scent of baked goods traveling through the air. It also means a new adventure in coffee tasting, when fall flavors come into play.
If the past year or more of staying at home has taught us anything, it is that home—and the coffee maker—is where the heart is.
We’ve enjoyed making coffee and coffee drinks at home, learning about new flavors and how to get measurements just right.
We also realized how much money we were spending by buying so much coffee outside the home. It adds up more quickly than you might expect.
Making coffee at home has been so much fun, and saved so much money, that I am now working on a coffee routine for home—one that involves turning a corner of my kitchen into a coffee station for making some favorite fall coffee drinks.
There are several pros and cons of making your own coffee at home versus buying coffee at a cafe or coffee shop.
Pros
- Use the expensive coffee maker that has been sitting on the countertop for some time.
- Choose your favorite whole bean coffee or ground coffee to make.
- It takes less time to make coffee at home and be out the door.
- Making your own coffee can save you money.
Cons
- Miss social interaction and noise at the coffee shop
- No fancy espresso machine
- It can be hard to get the brew just right
Making our own coffee at home doesn’t mean that we have stopped going out for coffee completely. Sometimes you want a treat or a place to meet with friends.
If you’re trying to save money, limiting coffee shop visits to special occasions or a few days a week can help to achieve your budget goals. You can continue to support your favorite local coffee shop by purchasing beans from them, even if you aren’t going in everyday.
For now, and for us, the pros outweigh the cons, when it comes to making coffee at home.
Fall Coffee Drinks
My favorite fall coffee drinks include lattes, iced coffees, and specialty brews that feature the flavors of fall. Cold brew coffee is another favorite, and it is also easy to make.
Popular fall coffee flavors include:
- Autumn Harvest
- Bourbon Pecan
- Caramel Apple
- Cinnamon
- Maple Pecan
- Pumpkin Spice
- Salted Caramel
These are the types of flavors that can make you feel like you are being wrapped up in a cozy autumn sweater. You can often find these flavors sold in stores, but they are seasonal flavors that are often only available for a limited time only.
Here are some things that you need to set up a fall coffee routine.
Coffee Maker
In most cases, any old coffee maker will do, so long as it brews coffee the way that you like it.
Pour Over Coffee Maker
Pour over coffee makers are great, because they allow you to have more control of the flow of water over your coffee grinds.
You can make pour over coffee at home, using a simple set up that may even let you use a reusable coffee filter.
The reusable coffee filter is my favorite part of this set up, since we can’t always find the specific coffee filters that we like to use. Plus, it involves less waste.
Mesh Coffee Filter
A mesh coffee filter can be reused, helping to reduce waste for the trash. It can also save you money over time if you don’t have to buy filters.
Electric Kettle
An electric kettle makes it easy to heat hot water to use with a pour over coffee maker, or to make tea at home.
Espresso Maker
The espresso machine is a favorite among those who like to make their own espresso at home.
Cold Brew Coffee Maker
If you like cold brew coffee, or prefer to drink cold coffee drinks, then a cold brew coffee maker is the way to go.
These are easy to use—you basically just add coffee and water. Place the container in the refrigerator overnight, and you have cold brew coffee the next day.
Coffee & Espresso
Making your own coffee at home gives you a chance to try many different varieties of coffee that you might not try otherwise.
You can buy whole bean coffee, which you have to grind in order to make it, or you can buy ground coffee, which will save you a few steps.
Trying coffee from countries like Brazil, Costa Rica, Ethiopia, Guatemala, Honduras, Kenya, and Papua New Guinea gives you a chance to travel the world through the taste of coffee.
Coffee Grinder
Buying whole bean coffee can open up your taste buds to new experiences, but you’ll need a coffee grinder to grind your beans at home.
Milk Frother
A milk frother makes it easier to whip milk to use for milk-based coffee drinks, like cafe Americano, cappuccino, and lattes. [Bosaly]
Coffee Syrups
Coffee syrups can be used to add flavor to your favorite drinks. Some great fall flavors are:
- Caramel
- Hazelnut
- Peppermint
- Pumpkin Pie
- Salted caramel
- Vanilla
Chocolate syrup is great for drizzling inside the cup when you want to make a mocha.
Coffee Storage Container
An airtight food storage container can help to keep your coffee fresh after you open the bag.
Ice Cube Tray
Use an ice cube tray to make frozen coffee “ice cubes” for your cold coffee drinks if you don’t want regular ice cubes to water your drink down.
Coffee Shop-Style Treats
A trip to the coffee shop wouldn’t be the same without coffee shop treats. Here are some ideas for foods to eat when drinking coffee.
So, this is the plan for fall–coffee at home and plenty of baked goods to go with it.
